List accounts before applying thresholds

Start with bank, brokerage and other financial accounts, including joint accounts and relevant signature authority. Record the highest balances and retain the source statements.

FBAR and Form 8938 are different

These are separate reporting regimes with different tests and submission routes. Completing one does not automatically satisfy the other. We review the relevant requirements for your situation.

Check the combined balance

FBAR can apply when the aggregate value of foreign financial accounts exceeds USD 10,000 at any time during the calendar year. Form 8938 has separate thresholds that depend on circumstances.

Missing earlier reports?

Tell us the years involved and whether the IRS or another authority has contacted you. The appropriate correction route depends on the facts; do not choose a procedure solely from a checklist.
